Mulled Apple Cider Vinegar Detox Drink

Whilst the majority of the year may be all about juicing, healthy smoothies, green tea and magical spiced elixirs, the festive season often sees many of us suffering the consequences of one-too-many celebratory drinks. If you’ve over indulged in alcohol, mulledACVsugar or processed foods, welcome to the world – it’s called being human. Temptation usually means December is more a feast-ive season than festive, which is why this mulled apple cider vinegar detox drink is here to save the day and get you back on your feet.

Apple cider vinegar may already be part of your morning routine, coupled with lemon and warm water for a cleansing and digestion-boosting start to the day. In this recipe, it’s combined with lemon, orange, and a host of spices that all help naturally restore the body back to full working order, as well as enhancing metabolism, and keeping agni the ‘digestive fire’ burning strong (which is essential if you’ve helped yourself to a few more mince pies than you meant to….).

Save this recipe for when you’re looking for a magical hangover cure, or you simply want to maintain your wellbeing this Winter. Make up a big pot so you’ve got enough on hand for other sore heads, or choose to start your day with this all season long!

Ingredients

(serves 2-3)

  • 1/3 cup apple cider vinegar (if you’re very new to ACV, use 1/4 cup between 2-3 to begin with)
  • 2 cups water
  • Juice of 1/2 a lemon
  • Juice of 1/2 an orange
  • Roughly 1 tbsp orange zest
  • Zest of 1/2 a lemon
  • 1 large cinnamon stick
  • 1 star anise
  • 1/4 tsp mixed spice
  • 1 tsp fresh ginger juice* or 1/2 tsp ground ginger
  • 1/2 tsp fennel seeds
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1 pinch ground nutmeg
  • Honey to taste

Method

In a large cooking pot, pour in the apple cider vinegar and water

Add the orange and lemon zest. Use a vegetable peeler to peel the circumference of the orange

Add the orange and lemon juice

Add the rest of the ingredients. *To obtain 1 tsp ginger juice, coarsely grate a tbsp fresh ginger on to a square of kitchen roll. Gather up the sides to create a small bag of ginger, and squeeze firmly over the pot. You’ll end up squeezing out about a tsp of ginger juice! Big love to Nigella Lawson for this tip!

Turn the heat on low and bring to a simmer

Leave on a very low simmer for about 10 minutes

Pour into mugs through a sieve or tea strainer and add a tsp of honey per person

Enjoy!
