January is usually a time we’re a little more health conscious than usual. The Winter definitely isn’t over yet, but the need to feel refreshed, light and revitalised is very apparent after the festive season.
Although January is often touted as the month to ‘detox’, it’s actually not a great time of year to do anything like this: Cold weather, dry Winter air and the fact that the foods that would naturally be available are still those heavier, more comforting dishes all indicates that this is the time to nourish ourselves to full health, not starve….
This comforting breakfast recipe makes the most of the last Winter or butternut squash of the season, and combines it with healthy fats that actually speed up metabolism so your body can work efficiently to absorb and digest nutrients. Include these ingredients regularly in your meals, and you’ll notice your skin glowing and feeling a lot healthier in no time.
Almonds are one of the nuts highest in protein to keep you full and satisfied for hours, while avocado is well known to help improve the quality of skin and reduce sugar cravings. The optional orange and lemon zest works as a powerful anti-inflammatory and contains lots of immune-enhancing vitamin C, providing a citrussy boost to wake you up in the morning!
Ingredients (Serves 2)
- 1 cup of chopped squash
- 1 banana
- 1 avocado
- 2 tbsp chia seeds
- 1 tbsp ground flax or hemp seed
- 1/4 cup almond or non dairy milkTop with: orange & lemon zest and raw chopped almonds*
- Cook the squash either by steaming for 10-15 minutes or cheat and place in the microwave for 7 minutes
- Once cooked, add all ingredients to a food processor or blender and blend until everything is well combined
- Scoop into two bowls and top with orange and lemon zest and raw chopped almonds.
*(Soaking the almonds – or any nuts you use in future recipes – over night allows them to digest more easily, so if you suffer from digestive issues, this may be a good idea to try out!)
The Supplement to Boost Glowing Skin
If Winter has left you looking a little grey and tired, this is one of the best options to enhance the health of your skin from the inside out. With just two teaspoons a day, you’re likely to notice big changes in how healthy your overall skin looks and feels within ‘within a week of use with continued improvements’. I was lucky enough to work with Deciem in trying out and reviewing their Fountain Molecule products, so take it from me – this is good stuff, healthy stuff, naturally-made stuff, cruelty-free stuff, and it works.
Containing a reactive type of glutathione – a powerful antioxidant that protects cells from freeradicals and the toxins we now inadvertently breathe in and ingest every day like peroxides and heavy metals – The Glow Molecule brings out a ‘bright, youthful-looking glow within a week of use with continued improvements’ say Deciem. They’re known as ‘The Abnormal Beauty Company’ for a reason; they use natural ingredients in a cleverly-combined way to create desirable effects. It’s simple yet highly sophisticated stuff, and best of all there’s no cruelty to plants, animals, humans or the planet involved.
Their support matrix of Hyaluronic Acid – a well known anti-ageing nutrient – is ‘the space filler and cushioning agent’ found in mammals. It cushions joints and nerves, hydrates skin and hair, and fills the eye. It’s responsible for that sought-after skin ‘plumping’ effect most females after the age of 45 are searching for….
Sweetened with xylitol, this ingredient is actually a natural sugar and is beneficial for the heath and appearance of teeth. If that wasn’t enough The Glow Molecule is flavoured with Acai, and we all know the huge amount of health benefits being touted about that particular superfood right now (think fiber, huge amounts of antioxidants, iron, calcium, vitamin A, and it’s been used throughout Brazil for centuries to improve the health of skin from the inside-out).
