How are those new year’s resolutions going?

Mid January is basically the time when we can tell if those good intentions we set on the first day of the month are going to stick, so if you need a little help in the health department, look no further.

If you’re still feeling a little sluggish and ‘heavy’ after a couple of months of ‘because it’s Christmas’ foods and one too many drinks, then this smoothie is the answer. Drink this a couple of times a week to provide the body with nutrients that are cleansing and nourishing, and will bring you back to full health and wellbeing in both mind and body.

Avocado provides healthy fats and is a natural mood-booster. The specific type of fats – monounsaturated – are particularly beneficial for increasing metabolism and helps to lower bad cholesterol. These healthy fats are also important for clearing ‘brain fog’ and avocado is particularly known as a ‘brain food’.

Blueberries are full of powerful antioxidants, and help replenish the radiance of skin by neutralising the balance of oils and strengthens blood capillaries.

Parsley is rich in vitamins C, B12, K and A, and is an effective immune-booster and helps to keep the nervous system healthy.

There’s a reason popeye ate so much spinach; the nitrates found in dark leafy greens like spinach and vegetables like beetroot help to boost key proteins in muscles, aiding in building strength and helping muscles to ‘fire’ more effectively when contracting.

Ginger aids in digestive health and curing sensations of nausea, as well as being especially beneficial for the immune system.

The citric acid found in fresh lime juice is a natural inhibitor of kidney stones and may also help to lower cholesterol. As a brilliant way to prepare the stomach and boost digestive fire before eating a meal, it can be useful to squeeze some fresh lime onto a slice of ginger and sprinkle with Himalayan salt.

Almond milk and optional raw protein powder both add muscle-maintaining nutrients, while keeping hunger at bay for hours.

Ingredients

  • 1 avocado
  • 1 cup blueberries
  • 1 handful fresh parsley
  • 1-2 handfuls spinach
  • 1 cup almond milk
  • ½ inch grated ginger
  • 1 tbsp hemp seeds or raw protein powder
  • juice of ½ fresh lime
  • top with lemon zest and grated fresh ginger

How to

  • Place all ingredients in a food processor or blender and blend well until smooth
  • Pour into your favourite glass or jar and top with optional zingy lemon zest and grated ginger for an extra citrusy boost

Sip this smoothie a couple of times a week and you’ll feel and see the benefits in no time!
