O.M.Ghee Elixir Recipe

Ghee is one of the most widely used fats in Ayurvedic cooking. The golden clarified butter is said to transport nutrients from foods and spices to bodily tissues and organs. Helping nourish ojas, the term used to refer to ‘vital essence’, strength of mind and body, ghee drinkresilience, youthfulness, and a certain ‘juiciness’ to life, ghee is also used in medicinal preparations, and is an essential component in the Ayurvedic kitchen.

Ghee is known to help aid digestion, and when combined with the spices in this recipe, can help enhance nutrient absorption, assimilation and ‘get things moving’ properly if you know what I mean…. Taking this drink in the morning is a wonderful way to prepare the digestive tract for the rest of the day’s food, boost brain function, reduce inflammation, raise mood levels, and provide the very important feeling of warmth, comfort and nourishment we inherently need during Autumn and Winter.

Ingredients

  • 1-2 tsp ghee (build up to 1 table spoon)
  • 1 cup organic or non-dairy milk
  • ½ tsp cinnamon
  • ½ tsp ground ginger
  • The seeds of 2 cardamom pods
  • ¼ tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp ground turmeric
  • Optional: Add honey to serve, especially during Autumn, when the sweet taste is important to include in your diet.

Method

Heat the milk in a pan until it begins to simmer

Once simmering, add the spices and stir well

After a couple of minutes, turn off the heat

Add the ghee and honey if you’re using it, to a blender

Pour in the milk and spices

Whizz well – if you don’t own a blender, just whisk everything together well.

Pour into your favourite mug

Sprinkle with cinnamon

Enjoy!
