Cocoa & Sea Salt Energy Balls

cocoa balls 1Not only are these energy balls absolutely delicious, they also happen to be full of the exact minerals the body naturally craves and requires before and after exercise (and for when you really really need a snack…. or just fancy some chocolate….). Good quality salt provides electrolytes, important for muscle function and hydration, cocoa contains a good amount of antioxidants that fight free radicals, coconut oil is a healthy fat needed for long term energy, dates are full of fibre and iron, honey is great for digestion and is a totally natural sweetener, and oats are mood-boosting, calming and can help control blood sugar levels.

Combine all of these benefits into one little ball then, and you’ve got yourself a pretty much perfect sphere of tasty, chocolatey, healthy energy. Try whipping up a batch on a Sunday and snacking on them throughout the week as an alternative to anything processed or store-bought.

INGREDIENTS

(makes roughly 30)

2 cups oats

1 handful  dates (stones removed)

2 tbsp organic cocoa powder

3 tbsp coconut oil (melted)

3 tbsp honey

1/4 tsp good quality salt

METHOD

Soak and soften the dates in a bowl of warm water for 5-10 minutes

Add the oats, cocoa and salt to a food processor and blend until the oats are fine and the ingredients are mixed

Add the dates to the food processor a couple at a time, whilst pulsing and blending the ingredients gradually

Once the dates are added, add half the honey and coconut oil

Blend

Add the other half of honey and coconut oil and blend until everything sticks together

Roll the mixture into bite-size balls and leave them in the fridge to set for around 30 minutes

Serve or save and snack on them throughout the week!
