For general wellbeing maintenance and those days that require a little TLC, this jar of anti-inflammatory, mind-enhancing, deeply nourishing infused coconut oil tonic is something you can keep in the fridge for weeks and can even be used daily in a number of ways.
With typical ‘golden milk’ ingredients like turmeric, black pepper and cinnamon, the combination of spices and a healthy fat like coconut oil makes everything much mire bioavailable and therefore effective. To put it simply; infusing the coconut oil with these spices means the body can actually absorb the benefits of each spice, and make use of it.
Try mixing a teaspoon into coffee, porridge, soups, stews, curries, smoothies, hot cocoa, or simply eat it straight from the spoon! Mixing it with a black coffee first thing in the morning is a good way to create your own ‘bullet proof coffee’ style drink, optimising brain power and satisfying hunger levels for hours. In Ayurvedic medicine, spices are often paired with some sort of oil or warm drink because this enables them to work more effectively with the body and mind. Try this and then experiment with other herbs and spices!
INGREDIENTS (makes one 250ml jar)
- Roughly ¾ cup coconut oil
- 1 tsp turmeric
- ½ tsp black pepper
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1 tsp ginger
METHOD
Place the coconut oil in a heavy-bottomed pot and melt on a very low heat
Once melted, add the spices and mix
Leave this all heating on the lowest heat possible for around 20 minutes. This allows the spices to release their beneficial properties and properly infuse into the oil. Make sure the oil does not burn throughout this process
After 20 minutes and when the spices are slightly fragrant, remove from the heat and leave to cool for a few minutes
After 2-3 minutes, pour the oil through a fine strainer or sieve straight into a clean jar
Leave on the side for a few hours, then place in the fridge and use whenever you need
Enjoy!
