turAyurveda is abundant with tonics and teas to help balance and invigorate the body and mind. Living with an awareness of Ayurvedic principles can not only help when it comes to discerning beneficial foods, activities, herbs and anything from scents to colours to help you feel your best, but also opens the doors to a world of creative medicines and elixirs.

This all-natural blend of simple ingredients is a powerful way to keep the immune system healthy, and is a wonderful way to rid the body of any oncoming illnesses. Everything in this recipe acts together like an antibiotic, but without the side-effects that accompany pharmaceutical antibiotics. You may already be aware of the rising concern over antibiotic resistance, which means preventative and natural recipes like this that help maintain a good balance of gut bacteria are essential right now. The next time you feel a cough, cold or bug coming on, reach for this first, empowering yourself to use nature’s medicine, and then go from there….

INGREDIENTS

1 jar raw, manuka or good quality honey (ensure there’s enough room in the jar to add a couple of tbsp. of the other ingredients to it)

2 tsp ground turmeric

½ tsp black pepper

½ tsp cinnamon

pinch of ground cloves

2 tbsp coconut oil (a healthy fat helps the body absorb the benefits of turmeric even more effectively)

METHOD

  1. In a pan, gently heat the coconut oil on a very low heat until melted, and stir in the spices
  2. Take off the heat and pour into the jar of honey
  3. Mix well and leave to set on the side

This mixture can be kept at room temperature or in the fridge, and it’s best to stir it well before taking 1 tsp per day throughout cold and flu season, or 2 per day if you’re feeling unwell.

Enjoy!
